SAVANNAH, Ga. ()– May is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) awareness month, but ALS United Georgia is urging people to get informed and support year-round.

ALS United Georgia describes it as a rare disease that can affect anyone at any age or at any time for reason that are still unknown. ALS can begin with speech and swallowing or even in one’s foot until they ultimately become paralyzed.

“My voice is getting worse, I can still walk but I limp. Eventually I am going to have too much saliva and not be able to swallow,” Beth Brock, someone living with ALS said.  “Every time I think about that I think, well right now I can still talk and get around, so then I feel happy.

Brock described her ALS as something she has to take day by day. She remains hopeful as she is surrounded by friends and family but is worried for the next generation.

“I really think about these young adults who are going through this, and I want there to be research. I want them to find this solution” Brock said.

ALS United of Georgia offers services year-round for individuals who are affected by ALS. Their mission is to “enhance the lives of people living with ALS, until they find a cure.”
