JSO explained this incident was the reason for a large police presence Friday. The man was taken into custody and determined to be having a mental health crisis.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says they recovered an AR-15, a shotgun, and a handgun from a man experiencing a mental health crisis in Downtown Jacksonville on Friday. JSO said the incident was the reason for the large police presence observed by several people in the area.

According to JSO, multiple 911 calls were made reporting an armed man making threats against neighbors at an apartment building. Officers responded, cautiously approached the man’s vehicle, and safely took him into custody. The weapons were confiscated at that time.

“We don’t know what could have happened, but this was a very dangerous and potentially deadly situation for many people,” JSO said in a statement.

Officers determined the man was undergoing a mental health crisis, and he is now receiving treatment while in custody, JSO said.

He is facing aggravated assault charges.
