Taylor Swift’s team has responded to news that she had been subpoenaed as a witness in the legal battle between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. The suit and countersuit stem from It Ends With Us. While the subpoena was expected, her team isn’t taking it kindly. It’s understandable. Swift’s name has been tossed around in reference to the legal drama several times, but it’s hard to ascertain precisely how she’s involved. A representative for the iconic entertainer believes Baldoni’s attempt to drag her into the legal proceedings is an attention-seeking tactic. A spokesperson for the singer suggested Swift’s name has only been dropped to drum up public interest.

Taylor Swift has been trying to keep a relatively low profile since the end of her Eras Tour. She’s been mostly successful throughout the first quarter of 2025. Unfortunately, it looks like 2026 will be pretty packed with some legal proceedings. While Taylor Swift was not directly connected to It Ends With Us, her name was brought up several times as the legal process unfolded. Now, she has officially been subpoenaed, and her team has some thoughts on that.

Deadline obtained a statement from Swift’s team. A spokesperson called the subpoena ridiculous. They noted that Swift had no actual connection, outside of licensing a single song, with the flick. The spokesperson said 19 other artists had done the same. They said the subpoena  “is designed to use Taylor Swift’s name to draw public interest by creating tabloid clickbait instead of focusing on the facts of the case.”

The inclusion of Taylor Swift’s name in a case that has little to do with her is being called an attention-grabbing move by her team. It’s not the first time someone involved in the case has been accused of trying to turn the proceedings into a media spectacle to garner sympathy for the less famous, Justin Baldoni.

Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, was heavily criticized for suggesting Blake Lively’s deposition should be held in an arena so tickets can be sold for it. Freedman, who has made several strange statements regarding the case, made the suggestion during a chat with People. In the conversation, he also revealed that Baldoni plans to testify in the case. Still, he never suggested his testimony should occur inside a packed stadium. Lively’s team has long contended that Baldoni and his lawyer have spent the last several months attempting to intimidate, humiliate, and bully her through the media.  The statement is just one recent example.

Freedman is a well-known entertainment lawyer based in Los Angeles. He has represented Michael Jackson’s estate and Gabrielle Union. Chris Harrison hired him to help navigate his exit from The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. The case is not scheduled to go to trial until March 2026. More subpoenas might be served before then.
