SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost and Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy held a town hall in Sarasota on Saturday.

The stop was part of their ‘On the Road’ campaign, where they travel across the country visiting the districts of Republican congressmembers who they say refuse to face their own constituents.

Sarasota is in Congressional District 17, which overwhelmingly reelected Republican incumbent Rep. Greg Stuebe in the 2024 elections.

“We’re going to districts where the Republican congressperson refuses to meet with their people,” Frost said. “And where they’re leaving a void open, we are filling that void and speaking with the people about what’s going on in this country.”

The two congressmen spoke at length about potential cuts to social programs like Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security, veterans’ benefits and nutritional assistance programs like SNAP.

“In the richest country on the face of the earth, everybody deserves healthcare by virtue of being alive, and nothing else,” Frost said.

Sen. Murphy ripped into Rep. Greg Stuebe for refusing to host a town hall in Sarasota, accusing him of only answering to “the billionaire class, creepy MAGA weirdos that surround Donald Trump, and his cult leader.”

Murphy also spoke about corruption in the federal government and warned the audience not to overlook actions just because they’re widely publicized.

“Just because the corruption is playing out in public view, doesn’t mean it’s not corruption,” he said.

He referenced the President’s meme coin, $TRUMP, as an example.

“The meme coin is one of the most corrupt things a president has done in the history of the United States,” Murphy said.

Last week, Trump took to Truth Social to promote a dinner he’s attending later this month that those with enough coins can attend.

The senator encouraged the audience to do one thing every day, no matter how small, to “put an end to this thievery and corruption.”
