SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A major traffic shift is scheduled to start this week for northbound traffic on I-95 at the I-16 interchange.

Beginning Wednesday — and weather permitting — the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will shift I-95 northbound traffic, opening the new collector-distributor lane, also known as a connecting lane at the I-16/I-95 Interchange.

Connecting lanes run parallel to the main travel lanes of an interstate or highway, linking it to access roads or entrance ramps to improve the flow of merging traffic.

The work will begin Wednesday at 10 p.m. and continue through Thursday morning at 5 a.m. Georgia DOT will close ramps to facilitate the traffic shift, moving I-95 northbound traffic to its final configuration.

Drivers on I-95 north will have to make exiting decisions sooner. The new connecting lane system is separated from interstate by a barrier allowing more distance to safely enter and exit at the I-16/I-95 Interchange.

Drivers should expect delays and intermittent lane closures along this stretch of highway.
