A Carol Stream man, 21-year-old Kewion Kingcade, ran from the scene, and two officers chased him, police said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said Kingcade then fell to the ground and dropped a gun. He appeared to reach for the firearm despite officers’ commands, COPA said.

That’s when one of the officers fired shots, striking Kingcade in the leg and hand, COPA said.

CPD initially said Kingcade turned toward officers with a gun in his hand before the officer fired shots.

Kingcade was taken to a local hospital in fair condition. The officer involved was taken to a hospital for observation.

Investigators recovered a gun from the scene.

Kingcade is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, aggravated use of a loaded weapon without a FOID card and four issuances of a warrant.

CPD’s Investigative Response Team and COPA are investigating.

COPA said officers’ body-worn cameras captured the initial interaction and the shooting.

COPA asked anyone with information or video footage to contact them at 312-746-3609 or ChicagoCOPA.org.

According to clerk’s court records, Kingcade remains in the hospital and did not appear in court on Tuesday. His next detention hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m. in Skokie.
