Authorities in Texas are looking for a capital murder suspect who cut off his ankle monitor and fled just before his trial was to begin, setting fire to the home of relatives where he was staying in the process.

Trever McEuen, 32, has been added to the state’s most wanted list, and a reward for his recapture has reached $30,000, KDFW reported.

McEuen reportedly confessed to gunning down his neighbor, 35-year-old Aaron Martinez, on May 1, 2023, when he was initially captured after a SWAT standoff. He was charged with capital murder, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and murder.

His trial had been set to begin on May 5, but four days earlier, he cut of the ankle monitor and fled.

McEuen had been released twice before after posting $2 million bonds.

Greg Abbott, who has been governor of Texas since taking over from four-term governor Rick Perry in 2015, called the state’s bail system “broken and deadly” and called for emergency bail reform “that must pass the legislature this session.”
