DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A Danville man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in two separate cases — one where he unlawfully possessed a gun and one where he had cocaine while he was in custody.

Vermilion County court records show that Tymone Jackson, 39, was charged with a total of 10 counts across two cases that were opened against him last year. On Thursday, he pleaded guilty to two charges in each case — unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and possession of a controlled substance in a penal institution. Those are Class 2 and Class 1 felonies, respectively.

The Vermilion County State’s Attorney’s Office said that on Oct. 24, 2024, Jackson was driving a car that was stopped for a Vehicle Code violation. The Sheriff’s deputy who initiated the traffic stop observed “suspicious activity” that led to a search of the car and the occupants.

Deputies found a loaded handgun, which Jackson was not allowed to have due to a previous conviction.

The State’s Attorney’s Office also said less than two weeks after Jackson’s arrest, a Sheriff’s investigator received information that drugs were present in the Vermilion County Public Safety Building. Following this lead, Jackson was questioned and searched; the investigator found cocaine concealed on Jackson’s person.

“This defendant, who was already facing serious charges for illegally possessing a weapon, showed complete disregard for the law by bringing illegal drugs into the Public Safety Building,” State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said in a news release. “Not only was his behavior illegal, but he endangered the security of our correctional facility, staff and inmates.”

For these crimes, Jackson was sentenced to 12 years in prison for unlawful possession of a weapon and six years for possession of contraband. Those sentences will be served concurrently.
