CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — University of Illinois Police were kept busy overnight by multiple college parties that eventually merged into a large gathering.
The gathering happened on Oak Street in the part of Campustown informally nicknamed “Seniorland.” The neighborhood is home to multiple houses and duplexes that college seniors typically rent.
This comes at the end of U of I’s graduation weekend, and an official with the U of I Police Department told WCIA that the gathering was in celebration of the participants’ graduation.
“At the end of each semester, UI seniors organize an informal gathering to celebrate their graduation,” Captain Jason Bradley said. “In the past, we’ve seen fires set in the roadways and other disorderly behavior. UIPD was on scene in the area to control any behavior that could cause a larger public safety concern.”
Bradley added that one couch was set on fire Monday morning, but it was quickly extinguished. There were no injuries and no arrests.
