CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Closing arguments concluded on Monday in the trial of two Carter County brothers accused of murdering their father.

Jacob and Joshua Hitchcock each face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege they planned to kill their father, William “Bill” Hitchcock, after he planned to sell property that they would have inherited.

Bill Hitchcock was found dead on his Elizabethton property by fishermen on the Watauga River in 2023, and an autopsy report determined he had been shot three times.

Both the prosecution and defense rested their cases on Friday, but before the defense rested, Joshua Hitchcock chose to testify.

While on the stand, Joshua Hitchcock said he did kill his father, but he claimed he killed Bill Hitchcock in self-defense.

The jury will receive instructions and begin deliberating after lunch on Monday.

This is a developing story.
