TV presenter Stephen Mulhern revealed that he was brought to tears while filming his new ITV show, The Accidental Tourist. The 48-year-old is best known for fronting Dancing on Ice, Catchphrase, and In for a Penny.

However, he endured a year from hell after the death of his father, Christopher Mulhern, and is currently undergoing challenging health issues himself. The new one-off ITV show sees Stephen’s pals Ant and Dec whisk him away to South Korea to push him out of his comfort zone to eat food he does not like, and was filmed shortly after his father’s death. As well as seeing the star explore the unfamiliar and expand his horizons, viewers will see a new and emotional side to Stephen.

In a candid interview with the Mirror, Stephen expressed the depth of his emotions during filming, saying: “No one’s ever seen me cry on the telly. But it was quite nice to not be behind a format, I’ve never done that. You’re going to see behind the razzle-dazzle, if you like.

“People have thankfully seen me on TV for nearly 25 years, but they may go, ‘Well, what’s he like at home? Is he going out with someone?’”

Stephen added: “I’m at the very centre of this, and it’s scary. They film and they film and they film and they just get everything. I think what you’re going to see is a lot of emotion. You’ll see me totally out of my comfort zone.”

The Catchphrase star admitted he was “gutted” that his dad didn’t get the opportunity to see the show before his passing. He added: “My dad had just passed away, so that’s the only thing. I’m gutted that he didn’t see it.”

It was announced in November that Stephen’s father, Christopher, had passed away, as a spokesperson confirmed: “Stephen has had an incredibly tough time over the past few weeks. His beloved father recently passed away, which has hit him hard and has been understandably very stressful.”

Stephen also battled through his own health woes and was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at a Pizza Express. A spokesperson told The Daily Express: “Following the anaesthetic that was administered, he had a few drinks which made him unwell and he was taken in to hospital as a precaution. He’s is now back home recovering.”
