Bruegel is self-described as a person in a position of “power and influence” who was loved by some and hated by more before the apocalypse. He is now a leader of a group of survivors in Manhattan.

Aside from running raucous – if not slightly suspicious – fights with Walkers, he also has an appreciation for art and the finer things in life, as well as a fun flair for sarcasm and a playful yet biting sense of humor. But The Croat (Željko Ivanek) dubs him a “duplicitous individual” and a “slippery eel” who is only looking to “feed his own mouth.”

His group occupies an expansive museum in Manhattan. The Croat mentions that Christos (Jake Weary) and his group lost the prime location to Bruegel in one of his “games” to which he replies, “Go big or go homeless.”

Clever and resourceful, Bruegel also found a way to use a large amount of mirrors to reflect natural light from the sun in an attempt to light up the museum without power.

“Electricity would be nicer, obviously, or methane torches,” he says in the episode “Feisty Friendly.”

Inside Bruegel’s Alliance With The Dama and Negan in ‘TWD: Dead City’

As a war between the survivors on Manhattan and the New Babylon Federation approaches, The Dama (Lisa Emery) knew that they would need Bruegel’s group if they wanted to come out victorious. Spurred on by Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) convincing church “sermon” and a gift of methane, Bruegel agrees to form an alliance.

“I dare any mainlander to set foot on this island,” he proclaims. “I dare any lawman to give me or you a ticket for jaywalking or you for peeing in the park, because we grow today, not only in numbers, but in zeal.”

It’s clear a key reason behind Bruegel’s decision is also because he desires a world with electricity again.

“I can’t stop thinking about it,” he says at the beginning of the fourth episode of season 2, as he reflects on being given the proof that power could be brought back to Manhattan. “It wasn’t just the church, it was the whole block. Radio City Music Hall. It was like traveling back in time, waking up from a long nightmare. How magical would it be to get the grid back on?”

Not one to accept a deal without a little negotiation, he does add what he calls a “small, tiny addendum” to “strengthen” their alliance. He asks to build a second methane facility at the museum. The Croat fiercely pushes against this idea, but Negan suggests they wager the “addendum” on a Walker fight. While Negan’s Walker ends up losing, he whispers something in Bruegel’s ear that changes his mind and Bruegel agrees to move forward with the alliance without caveats.

Could it have been about his old bodyguard, Tony?
