Perhaps one of the hottest reality TV shows at the moment is none other than Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Though, like many reality shows, the series follows a famous friend group, this one comes with a twist: this circle of friends consists of young Mormon mothers who make their living off of social media (primarily dancing TikToks), referring to themselves as “MomTok.”
Season 1 of the show followed the fallout of what soon became a national news swinging scandal, while Season 2 follows many of the contentious friendships that threaten to fracture the friend group altogether. Now that the series has proven so popular, fans are wondering when they can expect to tune into a Season 3.
More Episodes Have Already Been Filmed For The Show
Those who have been keeping tabs on filming for the show will take comfort in knowing that Season 2 isn’t the last we’ll see of MomTok. Even though Season 3 has yet to be officially picked up, there is very little chance that Hulu decides to cancel the show altogether.
Instead, fans are speculating that there are already more episodes quickly coming down the pipeline. Last year, after all, after the success of Season 1, the network announced that it would be picking up the show for an additional 20 episodes, a major order for any reality TV program.
That said, when Season 2 was released last week, sharp-eyed fans noted that there were only ten episodes, meaning it’s likely that an additional ten episodes have also already been filmed, and perhaps are being held over to create a Season 3. As for what drama the next season will contain, however, that seems to be another matter entirely.
Cast member Miranda McWhorter, who declined to participate in Season 1 but joined the rest of the women for Season 2, explained that she wasn’t at liberty to disclose what happened to the friend group after the Season 2 finale.
In a conversation with People, Miranda promised fans that, so long as they waited a little longer, they would get the “closure” they were seeking:
You’ll get answers and maybe a little bit of closure, regarding [the end].
“But we don’t want to get fired so we can’t give you much more,” her fellow cast member, Layla, added on.
The Timeline For Season 3 Remains Unclear
If indeed there is additional filming for Season 3, the exact time period it covers is still unconfirmed. We do know that Season 2 was filmed over the course of October through December of 2024, so presumably Season 3 picks up in early 2025.
That said, it is revealed throughout the second season that three of the group members are pregnant (including best friends Mayci and Mikayla as well as outcast Jen Affleck), meaning a break in filming could be necessary. Some fans have also theorized that filming for Season 3 might instead be crammed earlier than later, making it so that the cameras have shut off by the time some of the women’s summer due dates roll around.
Thus, while we don’t have an official pickup or an air date for Season 3 yet, the largest question that remains is which of the women will be returning to the cast. Season 2 saw a surprising inversion of the friend group, where some of those who were “out” before now find themselves back in, and vice versa.
Perhaps the biggest drama towards the end of the season was between founding member Taylor Frankie Paul and fellow cast member Demi Engemann. Demi began to be resentful of the attention that Taylor got not just from their friends but from the brand deals she was being offered, while Taylor accused her of trying to cut her friends out of the show so that she herself could have a bigger piece of the pie.
Rumor has it that Demi may very well find herself on the outskirts of the group in Season 3, making her an original member of the group who is no more. On the other hand, Whitney Leavitt, the so-called villain of Season 1, ended Season 2 being brought back into MomTok, an agreement reached by a majority vote.
That said, even Whitney herself has talked about her life beyond the show, sharing that she actually has ambitions to get into acting. She explained that, while others might not believe her, it was something she was quite earnest about:
I feel like people don’t like when I talk about acting, people won’t take it seriously. Even my friends or family. And it’s so funny to me, because it was the same thing as social media. I was like, ‘I’m going to make it big on here.’ And friends and family were just like, ‘Okay, best of luck.’ And then I did it.
Other drama that Season 3 will likely follow is that of Jen Affleck, who decided to stop filming midway through the last season in favor of her mental health. Jen was distraught to discover that she was pregnant with her third child while her relationship with her husband Zac was still very much on the rocks; she feared what bringing a new life into the emotional instability would be like, growing so upset she wound up bedridden for days.
The major cliffhanger of the Season 2 finale dealt with an entirely different incident: there are new rumors swirling that another cast member, Jessi, may have cheated on her husband with another reality TV star from her time appearing on Vanderpump Villa. Though her fellow cast member Layla seems to discover the truth (that Jessi may have slept with a man who isn’t her husband), the season ends before the rest of the friend group finds out—no doubt a bombshell waiting to be dropped later.
