Major retailers such as Target and Walmart sold the recalled “Dinty Moore” stew nationwide.

WASHINGTON — More than 250,000 pounds of canned beef stew are being recalled over reports that the cans may contain pieces of wood in them.

The recall, for 256,000 lbs. of of “Dinty Moore” beef stew, was issued voluntarily Thursday by Hormel Food Corp., according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety Inspection Service.

The recall affects 20-ounce metal cans labeled “Dinty Moore Beef Stew” with a “Best By FEB 2028” date and the lot code “T02045” printed on the can. The code may be followed by an additional number. The affected products were produced on Feb. 4, 2025, and bear establishment number “EST. 199G,” which appears on the can label.

According to the FSIS, the problem was discovered after Hormel received three consumer complaints about finding wood in the stew. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.

Even so, the recall was given the Class I classification, which is the most serious warning associated with a recall. A Class I recall involves a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.

Eating food contaminated with foreign objects can cause injury or pose a choking hazard.

The canned beef stew was distributed nationwide and sold at major retailers, including Walmart and Target. Both retailers have posted about the recall on their websites.

What states were the cans sold in?

According to Walmart, the beef stew cans were sold in 44 states, as well as Washington D.C.

What should I do if I bought a recalled can of stew?

The FSIS urged customers to check their pantries and dispose of the recalled product or return it to the store it was bought from for a full refund.

The FSIS said it will post a retail distribution list on its website once it is available.
