ORANGE CITY, Fla. – Two motorcyclists crashed on Interstate 4 in Orange City on Saturday after hitting an alligator, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crashes occurred around 6:08 p.m., starting in the westbound lanes of I-4 in the area of mile marker 110, troopers said.

According to a statement from FHP, the riders — a 67-year-old DeLeon Springs man and a 25-year-old Orange City woman on separate bikes — were traveling westbound in the inside lane when they both struck the alligator.

The impact caused the motorcycles to veer off the roadway left, where the DeLeon Springs man’s bike entered the wood line and struck a tree, the statement reads.

Both riders were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said, adding the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was dispatched to assist with the hurt alligator.

FHP is still investigating.
