SAVANNAH, Ga. () — The founder of the local nonprofit Fight the War Within was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to a federal charge in January of this year.

Miranda Briggs was sentenced two months in custody, and three-years of probations. She is also required to pay more than $129,000 in restitution.

Briggs faced a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for wire fraud, but prosecutors recommended probation after the plea agreement was reached.

She originally pleaded not guilty to both charges in July 2024.

According to court records, in 2018, Briggs claimed she was still married to a U.S. Army veteran who had taken his own life, and she received more than $130,000 from the VA in benefits.

Briggs had reportedly divorced her husband in 2017 and wasn’t supposed to receive any money.

As revealed in court testimony, Briggs was originally investigated because she filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the government.
