CLEARWATER BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – An overhaul is underway at the Clearwater Beach Marina after last year’s hurricanes caused damage.

Kelly Peterich, an engineer with the City of Clearwater, said last year’s hurricanes emphasized the importance of fortifying the facility.

“Just based on the age and the damage, we say it was definitely going to be in the works to redo the whole beach marina. This has been, kind of, in the works since 2021,” Peterich said.

The construction and heavy equipment are part of a $43 million project. Workers are raising the seawall more than a foot and swapping out a fixed fuel building for a floating fuel building that will rise and fall with the swell of a storm, up to 12 feet.

Additionally, crews are changing out materials.

“We’re going to use a product that’s made out of aluminum so it will actually float during the storms,” Peterich said.

Repairs are also underway at the harbor marina, which sustained $3 million to $6 million in flood damage.

“We had to replace all the sheetrock that had to be repaired, so we’re coming back, and all the restrooms are going to get repaired. We’re hoping to have that done in about 8 -10 weeks,” Peterich said.

Peterich said work at the beach marina is expected to be complete by next summer.

He told 8 On Your Side the city is assessing Pier 60 to determine plans for repairs.
