STATESBORO, Ga. () — A community vigil will be held in honor of two Bulloch County children who died in May on Wednesday.

Bulloch County community lost two children last week, 9-year-old Emily Grace Mayo and 4-year-old Landyn Wilkerson.

The vigil will take place Wednesday evening, June 4, at 7 p.m. on the lawn of the Bulloch County Courthouse.

This event will serve as a time for the community to come together in remembrance and support for the families, friends and loved ones of Landyn and Emily Grace, a city spokesperson said.

“As a father and as your mayor, I am heartbroken,” said Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar. “There are no words that can take away the pain of these losses, but I want the families to know this: Statesboro stands with you. We mourn with you. We are holding you close in prayer, thought, and love.”

The ceremony will include moments of reflection, candle lighting and tributes from local leaders and community members.

“This vigil is an opportunity for our community to show its unwavering support and compassion. We hope this gathering will provide comfort and strength to all who are grieving,” said McCollar.

The City of Statesboro’s Public Works Department will close East Main Street to traffic starting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in preparation for the event.

Mayo was killed on May 27 in a murder suicide, according to the GBI. Her father, 37-year-old James Lee Mayo shot and killed Emily in the parking lot of the Brooklet City Park before turning the gun on himself.

Wilkerson passed away two days later on May 29 after sustaining a gunshot wound at The Hamptons Apartments. The Statesboro Police Department said evidence suggested that Wilkerson accessed an unsecured firearm and discharged it.

The Statesboro-Bulloch community have organized two calls for kindness for the families of Emily and Landyn.
