CHICAGO (WLS) — A 32-year-old man was shot while driving on DuSable Lake Shore Drive near Streeterville Tuesday morning, Chicago police said.

The man said he was driving south in the 700-block of North DuSable Lake Shore Drive just before 11:30 a.m., when “he became involved a dispute with the driver of a black Jaguar SUV.”

The man, Maalik Gardner, said the suspect cut him off in traffic.

The two then had words before, he says, the suspect pulled out a gun and started firing.

“He mentioned that I put his passengers in danger, but I didn’t have no gun. What could I do? I can’t put y’all in danger, bro, especially if you got the gun. I ain’t got no gun,” Gardner said. “Bruh, people argue all the time in cars. Why are you shooting a pistol out of your car?”

Gardner said he was on his way home, near the Grand Avenue exit, when the incident began.

“I was trying to squeeze in front of him, but his car was quicker. So, he squeezed in front of me, and threw his middle finger up,” Gardner said. “So, we started just driving on the side of each other, talking and yapping, yapping, yapping. And, next thing you know the dude just showed me a gun and shot two times.”

Gardner was shot in the elbow.

After being shot, Gardner says, he remained calm, calling 911, while driving after his alleged shooter who, he says, was speeding away.

Gardner says the suspect then let out two people from his backseat before getting away.

Gardner drove to the 1500-block of South Wabash Avenue in the South Loop, where he saw a police officer.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, police said.

There were no other injuries reported.

The suspect drove south, and is at large.

Area Three detectives are investigating.

Multiple bullet holes could be seen on the passenger side of Gardner’s car.

The apparent road rage victim is still in the hospital Tuesday.

He’s set to undergo surgery Wednesday.

“We all make mistakes, but I’ll try to be a little bit more kinder from this point,” Gardner said. “Don’t even try to argue with people no more because they obviously got, you know, real short tempers. And they probably want to kill somebody.”
