SAVANNAH, Ga. () — If your child goes to Shuman Elementary – a school that’s been part of Savannah for over 60 years – there’s an important meeting tonight. The school board is considering a plan to close the school because of low enrollment and old buildings.

The proposal to close Shuman Elementary has been in motion for more than a year. This is part of the district’s long-range facilities plan aimed at improving efficiency and reallocating resources. Parents still have a chance to voice their opinions, but time is running out.

Built in 1963, Shuman Elementary has long served Savannah families. Although with only 421 students, just 45% of its capacity… the district says it’s time for change.

Under the proposed plan, students would move to Formey Elementary (Pre-K–2) and Andrea B. Williams Elementary (grades 3–5). No new buildings would be needed, and staff could fill open roles elsewhere. Officials say the district could save $1.4 million annually.

The building would be repurposed as a temporary site for future school renovations.

Today’s hearing is a state-required step before the district can finalize its plan to shut down Shuman Elementary at the end of the 2024–2025 school year. Parents who want to speak at the meeting must register in advance by calling the board office or signing up online.
