COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The ride-booking app, Uber, announced today their new feature aimed to help older adults get around independently.
Senior accounts are a part of Uber’s family profiles feature, allowing family members to set up accounts, book rides and get real-time trip updates. The app has also created a feature called Simple Mode, that allows seniors to experience an easier app interface, with larger text, saved places and fewer buttons.
Medicare Advantage plans that include supplemental benefit funds for transportation can be used for payment. Pre-funded cards issued by insurance providers can be used for eligible healthcare expenses, though eligibility may vary.
“Transportation is one of the biggest barriers to independence as people age,” said Silvia Candamil Neira, Vice President, Global Initiative on Ageing and Longevity. “Solutions like Uber’s senior accounts help break down that barrier by offering a simple and flexible way for older adults to get where they need to go—without always having to rely on others. It’s about dignity, freedom, and staying connected to the people and places that matter most.”
Uber says to set up a senior account, users can do the following:
- In the Uber app, invites an older adult to join a Family profile.
- The older adult will get a text with a link to download the app and create their account (if they don’t have the app already).
- From there, they can request rides on their own—or get help from family when needed.
