SOUTH CAROLINA (WSPA) – The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is warning residents of a scam text message.
Many have reported receiving a suspicious text message, claiming to be the SCDMV, and attempting to enforce a “final notice” of unpaid traffic tickets.
The message also threatens residents with suspending their vehicle registration, suspending their driving privileges, prosecution, a credit score hit and an additional 35% service fee charge.
The SCDMV said that they will never message drivers to collect payments of any kind.
“The SCDMV does not text customers to collect payments for unpaid tickets or toll violations,” said Mike Fitts with the SCDMV. “Customers should make sure for any transaction that they are visiting the real agency website at SCDMVonline.com and not a site with a lookalike address.”
If you or someone you know has received one of these messages, the best thing to do is to block the sender and delete the message. Do not click the link or respond to the message.
