Adolescence star Owen Cooper was all smiles as he collected the IndieWire Honor’s Breakthrough Award in Los Angeles.

The young actor, 15, won global praise for his portrayal of child killer Jamie Miller in the Netflix smash hit.

IndieWire praised Owen’s performance as ‘enraging, emotional, horrifying, and heartbreaking in equal measure’. 

He is now tipped to scoop a host of awards for the performance and has also won the Gotham TV Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series. 

Owen is also currently nominated for the Astra TV Awards in the Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie category. 

The performance was Owen’s acting debut after the series’s co-creator Stephen Graham sought to find an unknown talent from the north of England for the role.

The 15-year-old break-out star was just 13 when he landed the role of Jamie, a schoolboy accused of brutally murdering a female classmate and is tipped for Emmys success 

Owen is said to have been the standout talent from a pool of 500 auditions. 

Now, it has been reported that he could also be in the running for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at the Emmy Awards. 

If the teen is nominated, he will be the youngest person to ever receive the honour. 

Variety reports that Stephen Graham, 51, who played Owen’s dad in the show, could also be in the running for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.  

Following the success of the mini series, Owen lifted the lid on his ‘mad’ return to school after taking on the lead role in the hit Netflix show.

The 15-year-old break-out star was just 13 when he landed the role of Jamie, a schoolboy accused of brutally murdering a female classmate.

So convincing is his chilling portrayal, that he has since landed himself a role as young Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation, and is also set to feature in White Lotus star Amy Lou Wood’s upcoming series Film Club. 

In an interview with The New York Times, Owen admitted his return to normality was ‘a bit mad’.

Chatting to the publication alongside co-star Stephen Graham, who plays his dad Eddie in the show, the young actor revealed he had lots of attention from younger children as he returned to class on Monday.

He then said that Tuesday was better with only ‘a bit of bother,’ which caused Stephen to chime in with: ‘What kind of bother?’

Owen then reassured that it wasn’t anything serious – just children coming up to him, shouting his name and then running away.

His on-screen father Stephen smiled as he responded: ‘Ah, just some silly b*******.’

It follows the news that Adolescence hit Netflix’s Top 10 Global chart, gaining a jaw-dropping 96.7million views in just three weeks.
