Jimmy Kimmel explained on his show, Live, that their original plans for the episode were tossed out the window after Elon Musk launched into a scathing attack on President Donald Trump earlier that same day.
The late night host could not contain his glee as he recapped their spat, which seemed to come out of nowhere.
Kimmel recalled how just a few days prior, Musk was at the Oval Office receiving praise from Trump and even went as far as expressing admiration for the president, stating, “I love Donald Trump as much as a straight man can love another man.”
Kimmel humorously likened their relationship to that portrayed in the movie Brokeback Mountain, joking, “They were inseparable, like a modern-day duo. But now, things have taken a dramatic turn, and sides are being chosen.”
Kimmel especially enjoyed seeing Musk claim President Trump is mentioned in the Jeffrey Epstein files.
“I feel bad for Donald Trump. First he lost Jeffrey Epstein, now Elon. He’s running out of friends,” he quipped.
But he clearly didn’t feel that bad. “This is so hard for everyone – except me, of course,” Kimmel said. “This is great for me.”
Amidst all of this, the one person trying to get the gang back together is, surprisingly enough, Kanye West.
“Broooos please noooooo,” West posted on X as Trump and Musk continued taking shots at each other. “We love you both so much.”
Kimmel joked that West “took a break from designing his summer line of swastikas” to weigh in on the feud.
“That’s when you know things are nuts when the man trying to bring everyone together is Kanye West,” he said.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC.
