At 15, the young man — who now goes by his middle name, Elliott — has publicly come out as gay and announced his new name on his mother’s podcast, Barely Famous. Elliott’s journey from reality TV to self-discovery reflects his evolving identity and desire to separate from his MTV past.

“I started going by Elliott, because at some point, I wasn’t happy with my first name,” he said on the June 6 episode of his mother’s podcast. “It just doesn’t feel like me in some way.”

In addition to revealing his name change, he came out as gay. “Happy Pride, everybody!” he said. “I’m very nervous for this episode. I’m here today to show you who I am, not who you saw on TV for 12 years of my life. It’s very important to me because I feel like growing up on TV, it’s hard to show who you really are when a camera is in front of you all the time. It’s harder to be yourself.”

Kailyn noted how proud she is of her son, as she knows it wasn’t easy for him to make this important announcement regarding his identity.

“I’m crying because this shows your strength, and I’m just really proud of you,” the Teen Mom star said. “It’s a really brave thing to do.”

Teen Mom fans are often divided regarding Kailyn Lowry’s family, especially after Javi Marroquin’s recent tearful rant about her parenting. Despite this, fans agree that Kailyn is doing an excellent job of supporting Elliott Rivera through his announcement.

Kailyn took to her Instagram Stories on June 4, 2025, to address the situation. “I’m seeing the comments. I see everything that’s being posted right now, and I’m going to address it at a later time,” Kailyn said.

“But this week was dedicated to Elliott, and it’s super important to him and to our family to keep things as planned,” she continued. “And I’m not going to take this moment away from him.
