A prisoner who escaped a facility south of Brisbane last month has been caught after crashing an allegedly stolen car yesterday morning.

The inmate escaped from Palen Creek Correctional Centre on May 27.

Police will allege he then stole a Mercedes-Benz from a home on Bell Street at Kangaroo Point five days later, on June 1.

Officers were called to Mount Gravatt East at 2am yesterday after the stolen Mercedes was found crashed into parked cars.

Witnesses told police the driver had fled on foot.

Officers were then called to the car park of a fast food restaurant nearby where the same man had allegedly attempted to steal the car of a rideshare driver before being stopped by a member of the public.

Forty minutes later, police were called to Pine Mountain Road where it’s alleged the escaped prisoner had attempted to force his way into homes in an attempt to steal keys.

He was finally arrested in the rear courtyard of a home shortly afterward.

The 38-year-old has been charged with a variety of stealing, driving and robbery offences and was due to appear in court today.
