Fatal Shooting by Officer in Sullivan County Results in 1 Death

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Sullivan County on Sunday.

According to a news release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), an officer-involved shooting happened just after 10 p.m. on Highway 394 near Highway 11 West.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) trooper was reportedly responding to a crash in the area.

“When the trooper encountered the driver involved in the crash, the trooper, believing the subject was inebriated, attempted to arrest him,” the TBI said in the release. “For reasons still under investigation, the subject fled, and the situation escalated.”

The subject allegedly produced a gun and the trooper fired and killed him, according to the TBI.

No other injuries were reported.
