BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — The school board in Manatee County begins the process of finding its next superintendent on Tuesday. They’ll also set the final day for terminated superintendent Dr. Jason Wysong.

The board terminated Wysong without cause last month, less than 2 years into his contract. Some members of the board raised concerns about his lack of communication when dealing with issues.

The community and some board members raised concerns about the timing of the action. Board member Heather Felton said, “The short notice, this makes us look so bad. We look terrible to the public.”

At the time of the vote, Wysong told the board, “I am not giving up on the employees, the students and families of the district, but I will get out of the way if that’s what you all want.”

Under an amended contract up for approval Tuesday, the former superintendent will serve in an administrative role until his last day with the district, August 18.

It’s unclear if interim Superintendent Kevin Chapman will apply for the permanent position. He previously said, “I do serve at the pleasure of the school board. I know the school board wants to find a permanent superintendent by August. There will be a search and application process. We’ll see where all that goes.”

The district’s current plan for the search is expected to cost more than $15,000. According to documents, they’re hoping to follow a strict timeline:

  • June 25 – Begin advertisement process, website goes live, promoting search
  • July 18 – Advertisement closes – application posted on website as they are submitted
  • July 29 – Board identifies finalists
  • July 29 to August 12 – Final background checks and community feedback
  • August 12 – Board selects finalists for interviews
  • August 21 – Public Board interview each of the finalists, evening community meet and greet
  • August 22 – Individual board member/finalist interviews
  • August 26 – Board selects superintendent/contract negotiations begin
  • September 9 – Finalize contract
