Alabama man indicted on more charges in 2002 Bristol homicide

BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — An Alabama man has been indicted on additional charges in connection with the murder of a Bristol man.

Christopher James Havrilla, 52, was indicted for the murder of 24-year-old Cody Scott Matney on March 21, more than two decades after the homicide.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) announced Monday that new information in the case has resulted in the indictment charging Harvilla with the following:

  • First-degree murder
  • First-degree murder in perpetration of kidnapping
  • Especially aggravated kidnapping
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Abuse of corpse
  • False report (two counts)

As of Monday, Harvilla is being held in the Sullivan County Jail on a $1 million bond, with the condition that he wear an ankle monitor should he be able to post that bond, the TBI stated.

Matney was reportedly last seen at a business along West State Street in Bristol in April 2002.
