KJ Smith and Skyh Black stepped out for the 2025 BET Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on June 9.

Smith, who is six months pregnant, wore a chartreuse yellow gown with a full skirt and dramatic train. The dress featured a halter-style neckline with twisted detailing and a cutout design that framed her baby bump.

Smith and Black first met on the set of Tyler Perry’s Sistas in 2020 and married in September 2023. Now, they’re preparing to welcome their first child together.

In an interview with Essence, KJ Smith opened up about her fertility journey and how she once believed becoming a mother might not be in her future. She shared that her experiences with fibroids and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) led her to believe she wouldn’t be able to conceive.

“People told me the number one symptom of [PCOS is] infertility,” she said. “Perhaps I had convinced myself that I didn’t want to have children because I knew that, so I had completely taken myself out of the motherhood race.”

Smith said she had even consulted a fertility specialist and was preparing to begin IVF treatments.

“I had an appointment to go back to that fertility specialist who told me I was infertile,” she recalled. “I had an appointment in January to go back to that fertility specialist and start my IVF treatments, and I found out I was pregnant on January 19, 2025.”

The news came as a surprise considering she had convinced herself that she “didn’t want kids at all and “aspired to be a rich auntie”.

Meeting Black, however, shifted her outlook. “I did not meet my husband until well into my 30s, so I had already decided. And then when he came into my life, and you meet a man who is responsible and a leader who takes charge and wants to be a father, wants to have a family, my mind changed as we grew and as we became a couple and married.”
