DADE CITY, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was shot and killed by Pasco County deputies who were trying to serve a court order to take the man into custody for a mental health evaluation, officials said Tuesday.

The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. at a home near Rose Avenue in Dade City.

PCSO Colonel Tait Sanborn said deputies had visited the home multiple times since June 4 after Christian Havier Estrada Perez’s family requested he be evaluated due to his “erratic behavior.”

Deputies were not able to make contact with Perez until June 10 when they spotted him inside the home. Sanborn said a total of seven deputies were on scene.

Authorities asked Perez to come out of the home multiple times, but Sanborn said Perez refused. The sheriff’s office had previously been warned Perez was known to carry a firearm.

Sanborn said deputies warned Perez chemicals would be deployed inside the house, and it was around that time that Perez fired four shots at them.

Officials said Perez was using a firearm that they later learned was strapped to his hand.

Two deputies returned fire, shooting and killing Perez.

No further details were immediately available. Sanborn said the investigation will be turned over the to Florida Department of Law Enforcement for further review.
