ORLANDO, Fla. – Defense attorney Josephine Arroyo says her law firm is now handling more cases involving legal immigrants facing deportation.

One of them is Jeniffer Rodriguez Jimenez, who spent more than two months in a Texas deportation facility over a misdemeanor charge.

“It’s been an extremely traumatic experience for the family, for her being held longer than the criminal charge requires,” Arroyo said.

She explained that Jimenez had a valid driver’s license, which was later submitted to the prosecutor.

“The whole case got dismissed. ICE still decided to ship her and take her over to Texas,” Arroyo added.

Documents provided by Arroyo show the case dismissal and an immigration bond set at $6,000. Jimenez is now back home with her family, but Arroyo says it didn’t come without a fight.

“ICE was not responding to our requests. We even went to the ICE office,” Arroyo explained. “They said, ‘You’re gonna have to deal with this through the courts because we don’t have discretion.’”

Arroyo argues ICE’s enforcement priorities have shifted to targeting some legal documented immigrants like Jimenez.

ICE used to only target undocumented immigrants with felonies, she said, blaming recent executive orders from President Donald Trump and legislation supported by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“We have a client who is a permanent legal resident, who has a green card, who is in Texas being detained. People are here legally — you have to be very careful,” Arroyo said.

Arroyo, along with Jimenez and two other affected individuals, will speak at a press conference in downtown Orlando at 11 a.m. Thursday.

“Against all odds, our legal team fought to return them home to Florida, and they are now reunited with their families,” the law firm said in a news release.

News 6 will stream the news conference live at the top of this story.
