America’s Most Wanted was the nation’s first true crime show. Since the show launched in 1988, police have captured more than 1000 fugitives featured on the series. John Walsh, the man behind the popular show, isn’t stopping now. He and his son Callahan Walsh are still on the hunt for criminals, years after John and his family suffered their own tragedy with the abduction and murder of his son Adam Walsh. Now, investigative reporter Kristin Thorne speaks with John and Callahan as part of a new true crime video series, In Touch Investigates, and they take a look back on some of the biggest moments from the groundbreaking television show.

“It was the first reality show. It took off. It just caught the people’s fancy, and we tried to do it with dignity,” John, 79, exclusively tells In Touch. “I said, ‘We’re never going to cross the lines. It’s never going to be gratuitous violence. We’re going to pick the stories. Hollywood’s not picking the stories. We’re not going to be any tabloid show. We’re going to try to get justice because it took 27 years to solve Adam’s case.’ So, I know just where the people were coming from, and the public made this show a hit. We continue to be a hit.”

In 1981, John’s 6-year-old son, Adam, was kidnapped and killed. After the horrific tragedy, he and his family were determined to help others find justice in the face of unimaginable circumstances. They created the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, but John wasn’t stopping there. In 1987, he was tapped to host America’s Most Wanted. The show he launched continues to make a difference today. Last season alone, it helped capture seven fugitives and find two missing kids.

John recalls some of the most influential criminals that America’s Most Wanted had a hand in capturing.

“I chose the first guy. It was David James Roberts. He was on the FBI’s 10 Most wanted for years. He’d escaped from prison. He had raped and murdered two women,” John explains. “He was a horrible, bad guy. And I picked him because I’m the father of a murdered child. And we caught David James Roberts.”

Callahan, 40, also chimes in and reveals which criminal is at the top of his list who hasn’t been caught yet. Like his father, Callahan has a personal connection to the case.

“Personally, the case of Lindsay Harris. I knew Lindsay personally and she was murdered outside of Vegas. She was being manipulated and trafficked by a horrible individual, and she was reported missing about two weeks, I believe, after her initial missing person’s report went out,” Callahan adds. “Remains were found in Illinois off of sort of a truck stop area off the side of a highway. It took many years, I think six years for the DNA to hit and match that. Those were the remains of Lindsay Harris, my good friend. And the case is still unsolved.”

He continues, “I want the person who’s responsible for Lindsay’s death to be held accountable. I want that person to rot in the jail cell. I mean, they deserve a special place in hell, but that place begins on the inside of the jail cell.”

After Adam’s disappearance more than four decades ago, John and Callahan have made it their mission to help other parents know how to protect their children from the dangers that sometimes lurk in unexpected places.

“Your child’s safety is in your hands, talking about their social media platforms,” John says. “No, you have got to talk to your kids about them and hope that they will trust you enough to tell you if they’ve got that gut feeling that something’s bad’s going on and they’ve seen it online.”

Callahan echoes his dad’s sentiments, “The internet has created life for the better in so many different ways, but it has created new ways to harm children and new ways to exploit kids. And so we need to be talking to our children about safety from a very young age.”
