BRANDON, Fla. (WFLA) — A driver was arrested Thursday after authorities said she got into a fight with someone at a red light in Brandon and then began shooting at the victim’s vehicle.

The road rage incident happened shortly after 2 p.m. at the intersection of South Hilltop Road and West Brandon Boulevard, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the area after receiving reports of a shooting between two drivers.

Authorities found one of the drivers, 21-year-old Aiden Richards, with a gunshot wound to her lower body. The other person involved also stayed at the scene.

Detectives believe Richards fired the first shots, hitting the other driver’s vehicle multiple times. The victim then retrieved a gun and returned fire, seemingly in self-defense, according to the sheriff’s office.

The gunfire could be heard on a nearby driver’s dash cam video, which was released by the sheriff’s office Thursday night.

Richards was taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. She is facing the following charges:

  • Aggravated Assault with Deadly Weapon (x2)
  • Attempted Murder in the Second Degree Firearm – Discharge (x2)
  • Shooting at Within or into a Vehicle (x2)

“This kind of behavior is dangerous, irresponsible, and could have easily ended in tragedy,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Using a firearm because you’re angry behind the wheel is beyond unacceptable. We will not allow this kind of chaos on our roadways, and those who choose violence will face serious consequences.”
