AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) — An early morning crash involving a fuel truck shut down a major stretch of I-20 eastbound in Aiken County Saturday.
Authorities say the call came in just before 4 a.m. Emergency crews responded to the scene near mile marker 13, where an 18-wheeler caught fire. Multiple agencies, including police and fire, were called in to contain the blaze.
Two people were sent to the hospital.
As of now, I-20 is completely shut down between Exit 11 and Exit 18. A bridge on Old Vaucluse Road also collapsed. That road is also closed.
Officials say this will be a prolonged closure. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and find alternate routes.
According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, Eastbound traffic is being detoured off I-20 at Exit 11 and will re-enter at Exit 18. Westbound traffic will follow the opposite detour; Exit 11 to Exit 18.
