DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Decatur Fire Department is investigating after a fire broke out at an unoccupied home Saturday night.

Fire crews responded to a home on W. Green Street in Decatur around 9:45 p.m. When they arrived, they found smoke coming from the home. The crews entered, began to extinguish the fire, searched for anyone who might be inside, and provided ventilation to the home.

“The speed and coordination between the companies helped to mitigate the incident quickly,” the Decatur Fire Department said in a news release about the fire.

Despite the quick response, the home did see “major damage” because the fire extended into the attic space. Now, the Decatur Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit is working to figure out what may have started the fire. The residence was unoccupied at the time and was undergoing renovations.
