Euphoria and former Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane offered a “sobering” update on his health after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

The actor opened up on Good Morning America about losing mobility in both of his hands, adding that he’s “worried” he will lose function of his legs, as well.

Speaking to Diane Sawyer, Dane said he first saw a specialist after he began experiencing “some weakness” in his right hand a year and a half ago.

“I didn’t really think anything of it at the time. I thought maybe I’d been texting too much and my hand was fatigued,” he said. But the symptoms became “worse,” and nine months later Dane was diagnosed with ALS.

“I will never forget those three letters. It’s on me the second I wake up,” he said. “It’s not a dream.”

Dane revealed that he has already lost mobility in his right side and is slowly losing function on his left side, as well.

“I have one functioning arm. My dominant side. My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working,” he said. “It’s going. I feel like maybe a couple, few more months, and I won’t have my left hand either. It’s sobering.”

The longtime actor later broke down in tears during the interview as he confessed, “I don’t think this is the end of my story. I don’t feel like this is the end of me.”

He also shared an emotional moment he shared with his daughter when he realized he was having difficulty swimming, despite his past as a competitive swimmer and water polo star.

“When I jumped in the ocean that day and realized I couldn’t swim [or] generate enough power to get myself back to the boat, I thought, ‘Oh, God,’” Dane said on GMA. “And then I realized in that moment I’m not safe in the water anymore.”

He said his daughter “dragged” him back to the boat. “I was like breaking down in tears, so I made sure she got back in the water with her friend and continued on with the snorkeling with the guide,” he said. “But I was just heartbroken.”

Dane first announced his diagnosis in April 2025.

He maintained that he plans to continue working and will still appear in Euphoria Season 3, which is currently in production and slated to premiere on HBO in 2026.

“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week,” he told People. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
