The Possibility of Robert Pattinson’s Batman Entering the DCU Isn’t Completely Ruled Out

Speculation around who will don the cape and cowl in the DC Universe’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold continues, and while Robert Pattinson is primarily tied to Matt Reeves’ standalone The Batman franchise, James Gunn hasn’t completely dismissed the idea of crossover. Despite the plan for Reeves’ Batman trilogy to remain separate from the main DCU timeline, Gunn recently commented that Pattinson joining the broader universe isn’t out of the question.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn acknowledged that the chances of Pattinson becoming the DCU’s Batman are slim, but not nonexistent. “I would never say zero, because you just never know,” he said. However, he emphasized it is “not likely at all.” Gunn also addressed concerns regarding The Batman Part II, reaffirming that the sequel is still in development despite delays. “It’s not canceled. We don’t have a script. Matt’s slow. Let him take his time,” Gunn added, defending Reeves’ creative process.

What James Gunn’s Statement Implies For DCU’s Batman Casting

While Gunn’s comments do not confirm any imminent casting of Pattinson in the DCU, they suggest a degree of flexibility in long-term planning. Pattinson, now 39, is eight years older than David Corenswet, who will play Superman in Superman. This age gap actually aligns with The Brave and the Bold‘s vision of an older, more experienced Batman—one who is also a father to Damian Wayne. In that context, Pattinson could fit the profile of the DCU’s Bruce Wayne without contradicting established continuity.

Could Pattinson Work In Both Universes?

In The Batman, Pattinson portrays a younger, emotionally raw Bruce Wayne still early in his vigilante career. The DCU’s Batman, by contrast, will be a seasoned protector of Gotham, leading the Bat-Family. Having Pattinson portray both versions would create a clear contrast—if handled carefully. Still, Gunn’s tone suggests a preference for keeping the two cinematic universes distinct. DC appears committed to Matt Reeves’ vision, allowing it to evolve independently from the larger DCU narrative.

Final Thoughts On Gunn’s Take

Gunn’s remarks indicate that while a multiverse approach is always possible, it’s not currently the plan. The most probable outcome remains a new casting for the DCU’s Batman. Given Reeves’ desire to keep his trilogy separate and Gunn’s support of that direction, it’s likely that Pattinson will remain solely within the world of The Batman, while a different actor steps into the role for The Brave and the Bold. Regardless of who dons the cape, the future of the Dark Knight in the DCU promises to be an exciting one.
