“It happened towards the end of the shift for many of the team members who were going home and witnessed what occurred,” Whiddon Aged Care chief executive Chris Mamarelis said.

Staff and neighbours rushed to his aid and called triple zero.

“Paramedics and police were there to help the old man who was lying on the street,” witness Surez Mainali said.

“They were giving him first aid treatment on the road.”

Marusic was taken to Liverpool Hospital under police escort but he later died.

Police allege a silver dual-cab ute failed to stop after striking him.

They seized a ute and arrested and charged a 25-year-old man over the incident.

Marusic lived at the facility for the past four years and had become an integral part of its community.

His death left members of the aged care facility shattered.

Staff told 9News he loved feeding the birds and would often pick up a lottery ticket from the local newsagent on his daily walks.
