A 25-year-old man who was disqualified from driving has been charged after a 70-year-old aged-care resident died following an alleged hit-and-run in south-west Sydney.

He was crossing Canterbury Road just after 4pm when police allege he was struck by a ute.

“It happened towards the end of the shift for many of the team members who were going home and witnessed what occurred,” Whiddon Aged Care chief executive Chris Mamarelis said.

Staff and neighbours rushed to his aid and called triple zero.

“Paramedics and police were there to help the old man who was lying on the street,” witness Surez Mainali said. 

“They were giving him first aid treatment on the road.”

Marusic was taken to Liverpool Hospital under police escort but he later died.

About 1pm today, NSW police executed a search warrant at a home on Kokoda Place in Glenfield.

They seized a ute and arrested and charged a 25-year-old man over the incident.

Marusic lived at the facility for the past four years and had become an integral part of its community.

His death left members of the aged care facility shattered. 

Staff told 9News he loved feeding the birds and would often pick up a lottery ticket from the local newsagent on his daily walks.

“He was a beloved resident, a part of our community, involved in a lot of activities,” Mamarelis said.

“He was known and part of the fabric of what we do here. He is sorely going to be missed.”

The arrested man was taken to Campbelltown police station, and charged with negligent driving occasioning death, failing to stop and assist after a fatal crash, and driving while disqualified.
