DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A Danville man was arrested Sunday night and formally charged after police said he fled from a traffic stop in a stolen vehicle.

Deputy Chief Terry McCord said in a news release that 42-year-old Alejandro Cardoza was identified as the person who was pulled over in the area of Bowman Avenue and Main Street. An officer spotted the car Cardoza was driving and observed that it was stolen.

McCord said Cardoza initially stopped for the officer, but drove off at high speed when the officer made contact with him. The officer subsequently lost sight of the truck, but McCord said community members reported the truck driving erratically and helped officers find it again.

The truck was found unoccupied in the area of Dearborn Street and Western Avenue. McCord said that more witnesses provided information on which direction Cardoza ran on foot, and a K9 tracked him to heavy brush about four blocks away from the truck.

Court records show that Cardoza is charged with two felonies — a Class 2 count of possession of a stolen vehicle and a Class 4 count of fleeing police — and three Class A misdemeanors — obstructing a peace officer, criminal damage to property and driving with a revoked license. He made his first appearance in court on Monday and was released from custody with conditions.

He is due back in court on July 14.
