What Makes No Sense About Top Chef: Destination Canada’s Finale

Most Top Chef fans agree that it is one of the best reality shows ever for many reasons, including that the show has introduced the world to many great chefs. However, there are problems with the show, including that quickfire challenges need to be changed, missing elements of the show need to return, and Last Chance Kitchen should be reworked. On top of that, Top Chef: Destination Canada has been a let down in some ways that make it feel like the season needs some tough love.

Still, Top Chef is still such a great show that it has a slew of dedicated fans who watch every season and understand that the show is so hard that it is easy to lose. That said, many of those dedicated fans still can’t make sense of a major aspect of Top Chef: Destination Canada’s finale.

Top Chef: Destination Canada’s Finale Relocating Makes No Sense

In the modern reality TV landscape, the majority of the top shows get filmed in the same area season after season. A perfect example of that trend is what has happened to Survivor over the last several years.

For many years, Survivor was known for filming seasons in different countries. However, since the 33rd season of Survivor, every season has been filmed in the exact same place, the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji.

With that in mind, Top Chef deserves credit for filming seasons in different locales. However, the admirable decision to make Top Chef a globe-trotting show has led to the show’s finales not making sense in a major way.

Throughout Top Chef’s history, the show has mostly been filmed in notable cities and states from around America.

However, with the 22nd season, the decision was made to move the show to a neighboring country. As a result, that season was given the title Top Chef: Destination Canada.

Since Canada is a huge country with a variety of cultures and weather systems, filming a Top Chef season there opened up a lot of possibilities.

The 22nd season of Top Chef being themed around Canada was an especially big deal for one of the show’s judges. As Famous Birthdays reports, Gail Simmons went home for the season since she was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on May 19th, 1976.

Despite the vast possibilities, it turns out that part of Top Chef: Destination Canada’s most noteworthy moment is going to happen outside the country. Instead of staying in Canada, it was announced that Top Chef: Destination Canada’s finale was filmed in Milan, Italy.

Of course, Milan is a gorgeous locale that is famous around the world for very good reasons. On top of that, virtually everyone has strong opinions about whether they love or dislike Italian food. With that in mind, it will make perfect sense if there will be a Top Chef season in the future that is themed around and filmed in Italy.

However, when a season is titled Top Chef: Destination Canada, it simply doesn’t make sense to film its finale in Italy. It would be like someone saying that they were going on an Italian vacation and then revealing they would be spending a major part of their trip in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

To be clear, Top Chef: Destination Canada is far from the first season that has had this nonsensical aspect.

Throughout the Top Chef seasons named after American cities or states, the finales have often been filmed in locations from other countries that are famous for their food. However, Top Chef: Destination Canada’s finale moving to another country makes even less sense.

Ever since Top Chef began filming finales in different locations, the main appeal has been that it mixes things up. While it was strange that Top Chef: Kentucky filmed its finale in Macau, for example, the show’s producers choosing to not limit a season to a single state could be understood.

However, given how huge Canada is and how different provinces and cities from around the country can be, the season finale didn’t need to move to Italy to mix things up.

Why Top Chef: Destination Canada Moving Its Finale To Milan, Italy Was Especially Frustrating

As is the case with every season of the acclaimed reality show, Top Chef: Destination Canada was great in many ways. That said, one complaint about the season that many people had made the finale moving to Italy even harder to stomach.

Throughout Top Chef: Destination Canada, many fans rightfully argued that the season didn’t take full advantage of its location.

In fact, it could be argued that the best Canada-themed moment of the season was when the judges ate at a table placed within a mini hockey rink in the Top Chef kitchen.

There were so many more ways that Top Chef: Destination Canada could have highlighted the country’s cuisine and culture. The season’s finale was a perfect opportunity to do a better job playing into the season’s Canadian theme.

With that in mind, the fact that the finale of Top Chef: Destination Canada was filmed in Milan, Italy is especially egregious.
