DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A dog was killed in an overnight house fire in Decatur that left its owner displaced.

The fire happened around 3:30 a.m. Thursday on Boyd Street between Decatur Street and Forrest Avenue. Officials from the Decatur Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched for a reported structure fire and they arrived to find a 1 1/2 story home with “heavy fire showing” from the second story.

Firefighters initially attacked the fire from outside of the home before moving inside to extinguish the remainder of the fire. Two dogs were located during search efforts; one of the dogs did not survive.

One person was home at the time of the fire, but officials said they got out of the home safely. No firefighters were hurt battling the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Decatur Fire Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
