TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A second customer of a Hillsborough County roofing company has called Better Call Behnken for help, saying they forked over a hefty deposit — their insurance settlement — and haven’t received a roof months later.

Tim Smith, of Polk County, said that in January, he paid $10,000 to Platinum Roofing, shown in public records as Platinum Roofing & Restoration.

His insurance company sent $10,000 of a $15,000 settlement. He can’t get the rest until he shows he spent the $10,000 on his roof.

“I was told they should be able to get started by the end of January or first of February,” Smith said. “From then on every week or so, I got more excuses. I was so a couple times that the billing permits and then I was told the building permits were not in. I was told that the materials have been ordered at least half a dozen times. The materials that never showed up.”

He said no one responds to his messages, and Platinum Roofing’s Brandon office abruptly closed, with no forwarding information.

Better Call Behnken has sent repeated messages this week to Nick Jackson, the owner of Platinum Roofing, and he has not responded.

Both Tim and Ardree Chatifield, another customer, filed complaints with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which oversees licensed professionals.

Tim showed me a letter he received from the DBPR that showed that the office is investigating his complaint against the license holder for Platinum Roofing.

His name is Willy Solis, a certified roofing contractor, who lives in Texas.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has talked with both of these customers and another homeowner in Ft. Myers.

The sheriff’s office said they want any customer who paid and received nothing to call them.

Meanwhile, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is now looking into Smith complaint.
