URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — People enjoyed Friday’s weather while they were able to because this weekend temperatures are going to increase.

There is a heat advisory for the next several days for the entire Central Illinois area and health professionals want to make sure you’re safe. Emergency Department Director Holly Cook said two of the most common illnesses they see on extremely hot days are heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Heat exhaustion symptoms include feeling weak and dizzy. Heat stroke causes your body temperature to rise and can make it difficult to speak. Cook said the best way to stay protected from the heat is to plan ahead.

“Don’t just think of the next 1-2 hours of your day; think of the next 12 hours, the next 24 hours, and plan accordingly with the time of day, what the weather forecast is going to be,” Cook said. “Do you have enough fluids? Do your family and friends know what your plans are in case something were to change, or something were to happen? That would be my suggestion.”

She said if you do see someone possibly having a heat stroke, get them to the nearest hospital and don’t give them any water because they could choke.
