President Donald Trump confirmed the US carried out an attack on Iran in a live address to the nation and said the strikes targeting Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz were a “spectacular military success”.

Trump said Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities had been “completely obliterated” shortly after first announcing the US attack on his platform Truth Social.

“Our objective was the destruction of Iran’s nuclear enrichment capability and a stop to the world’s number one state-sponsor of terror,” Trump said in a message from the White House.

“I can report to the world the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated.

“Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace.”

Trump said he “hopes” further military action will not be needed, as he congratulated the US military on its operation.

“Hopefully, we’ll no longer need their services in this capacity. I hope that’s so,” he said.

“There will be peace or tragedy for Iran, far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days.

“Remember, there are many targets left.”

He added: “Tonight’s was the most difficult of them all, by far, and perhaps the most lethal. But if peace does not come quickly, we’ll go after those other targets with precision, speed and skill.”

The president went on to congratulate Israel Prime Minister Benjamin ‘Bibi’ Netanyahu for this role in carrying out the US strikes.

He said he worked “like a team perhaps no team has ever worked before” to launch an assault on Iran’s nuclear sites Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.

Trump then spoke directly to God as he neared the end of his speech.

“I want to just thank everyone and in particular God,” he said.

“I want to just say we love you God, and we love our great military, protect them.”

Trump said the US Secretary of Defence would hold another press conference at the Pentagon at 8am local time (10pm AEST).

He closed his short address with the statement: “God bless the Middle East, God bless Israel and God bless America, thank you very much.”

Iranian state media acknowledged its Fordow nuclear facility was attacked during the strike carried out by the US military today.

Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency early on Sunday quoted a statement from Iran’s Qom province after US President Donald Trump confirmed the strikes in a post to social media.
