VINEYARD, Utah (ABC4) Search and rescue crews were able to locate and recover the body of a missing man on Utah lake early Monday morning, the Utah County Sheriff’s office confirmed.
According to officials, a 23-year-old man was last seen near the Lindon Marina while riding on a WaveRunner with his cousin. The incident happened at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Officials confirm the man was not wearing a life jacket at that time.
Sgt. Ray Ormond with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said the waves and wind could have caused the WaveRunner to turn over.
At around 1 a.m. on Monday, search and rescue crews confirmed they located his body in about 8 feet of water. Teams from Utah State Parks, Life light and Department of Public Safety helped with the rescue effort.
Sgt Ormond also asked the community to take all the necessary precaution before recreating in the water this summer.
“The first thing is to always wear a life jacket. Specially of you are riding on a jet ski or WaveRunner, have a life jacket on your person. If your on a boat, have one within arm’s reach. Also check the weather before you go. I have been recreating on Utah Lake for the majority of my life and I know this lake can go from a very calm lake to high wave conditions once the wind picks up,” Sgt Ormond told ABC4.com.
“This is a tragic and unfortunate ending to the course of events from yesterday. We would like to extend our condolences to the family,” the Sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The cause of death is yet to be determined.
