CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A Champaign man was charged with attempted murder in connection to a shooting that left a 13-year-old with life-threatening injuries earlier this month.
Champaign police offices responded to the 200 block of Burr Oak Court around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 8. When they arrived, they found a teenager with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. The teenager was brought to a hospital, where he remains at this time. Another teenager was shot in the hand in this incident, but has since been treated and released from a local hospital.
WCIA previously reported that “multiple unknown subjects” were involved in a fight in the area, and shots were fired. Those involved fled before officers arrived. After investigating further, police said they determined that 27-year-old Kejuan Jenkins was among those “responsible for the gunfire.”
Jenkins was already in the Champaign County Correctional Center on unrelated charges and was charged with attempted murder in relation to the shooting earlier this month on June 25.
Police said that the investigation is ongoing and that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to call the police department at 217-351-4545. To submit an anonymous tip, contact the Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477 (TIPS), visit them online or the “P3 Tips” mobile app.
Jenkins will appear in court again on Thursday for a pretrial detention hearing. In addition to the attempted murder charge he is also facing two counts of aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm.
