The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says a group of individuals unrelated to the woman got into an argument, which escalated into gunfire.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An 18-year-old woman was hospitalized Monday night after being shot while watching her younger siblings play at a playground at a Jacksonville apartment complex on Kernan Boulevard, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened around 7:05 p.m. Monday at Pinewood Pointe Apartments, located at 1801 Kernan Blvd. South, JSO Sgt. Mitlyng told First Coast News.

After officers responded to the scene, the woman whose identity was not released by JSO, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mitlyng said.

Mitlyng further explained that JSO’s initial investigation into the shooting revealed that the woman was watching her siblings at the playground when “an unrelated group of individuals” nearby got into an argument, which escalated into gunfire.

Detectives also responded to the scene and spoke with witnesses, as well as reviewed surveillance video, according to Mitlyng.

Anyone with information in reference to the incident is asked to call JSO’s non-emergency number at 904-630-0500. To provide information anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
