Officer Rivera died in the line of duty on June 5 when investigators said she was unintentionally shot by a fellow officer during a tactical operation in the Chatham neighborhood.

Officer Rivera’s funeral took place at Living Word Christian Center in Forest Park.

It was a day of mourning for Chicago police and the loved ones of Officer Rivera.

The 36-year-old was laid to rest in Forest Park as family members shared just how special of a person she was.

“As Krystal grew, her presence was magnetic,” Mercado said. “She was bold, joyful and fearless. From early on it was clear serving and protecting were inherently part of her DNA.”

Her loved ones remarked on her silent way of providing comfort and encouragement

“She would fix your hair without saying a word, just so you felt good walking into the world. That’s who she was someone who wanted everyone around her to win,” Mercado said. “She embodied the epitome of motherhood. Not just in raising her own but how she nurtured, defended, loved everybody around her.”

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson were among those in attendance at Living Word Christian Center as hundreds gathered to honor her life.

“This is an opportunity for us as a city to put our arms around one another to ensure our police officers have everything they need to serve honorably and to make sure that we’re not asking them to do more than they’re charged to do,” Johnson said.

The ceremony was filled with photos and videos that showcased just how much Officer Rivera meant to her loved ones, specifically her 11-year-old daughter.

Superintendent Snelling honored that young girl with a service flag as he said she already carries so much of her mother within her.

“The loss of officer Krystal Rivera to her child is a huge loss but she left her with something that’s more beautiful than any parent can ever leave someone with a legacy,” Snelling said.

On the city’s West Side, there was a fundraiser in Rivera’s honor.

Her cousin Felix Batista, a retired police officer, recalled the day she decided she wanted to serve the Chicago Police Department.

“She came to me and we talked about it, the dangers of the job, but I encouraged her. ‘Yes, do it. Become a police officer. It’s a great job.’ Never ever imagined anything like this would happen,” Batista said.

The day she died is still vivid in Batista’s mind.

“That particular day she had lunch with her grandma, my mother saw her on the way out,” Batista said.

That would be last time her family her saw her alive. Now in her death, the Brotherhood of the Fallen organizing this fundraiser as show of support to her daughter and family.

“The Brotherhood for the Fallen, they’ve reached out and just put their arms around us and taken us and given us so much love,” Batista said.

The fundraiser was held in hopes to ease the pain of the unspeakable loss of their family’s beacon of light and to ensure Officer Rivera’s legacy continues.

Organizers of the event said even before the doors opened, they had already raised $10,000, and they expected to raise thousands more.

ABC7 heard a lot on Wednesday about just how energetic of a person Officer Rivera was, and her ability to be bold and fearless. Superintendent Snelling said they will now carry that same energy in helping her family get through this.
