The announcement comes days before the state’s largest pet adoption event of the year, with one event slated for this weekend at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Do you need a new furry friend?

Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services said Wednesday that the shelter has seen a “significant increase” in adoptions this year compared to last.

The announcement comes days ahead of the state’s largest collective pet adoption event of the year. Several shelters are taking part in events across the state, with one location in Jacksonville.

Officials said from January to May of this year, there was a 17% increase in cat adoptions when compared to 2024. Additionally, there’s been a 36% increase in dog adoptions this year compared to last.

“We are so proud of this increase in adoptions, and it reflects the hard work of our entire team and our community,” ACPS wrote on Facebook.

Florida’s largest adoption event this weekend

Hundreds of dogs and cats will be available for adoption at the Florida Mega Pet Adoption event at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds this weekend. All adoption fees are waived with vaccinations included.

Organizers said the goal of the event is to send 2,000 pets to their fur-ever home.

The event will feature animals from nearly 12 organizations, including ACPS and the Jacksonville Humane Society.

Last year, eleven shelters came together for the event, bringing hundreds of animals from across Florida. Organizers said 469 animals were adopted during the event, and no cats were left behind.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds, located at 510 Fairgrounds Pl.
